In Australia, it's quite common to encounter vehicles stranded on the roadside due to issues with their engine cooling systems. A significant number of these incidents are attributed to problems with the radiator. When a vehicle's cooling mechanism isn't functioning properly, it can result in the engine overheating, which can lead to serious and costly damage.

It is crucial to ensure that the cooling system is in optimal condition to avoid such scenarios. Regular maintenance and inspections are essential to keep the cooling system and radiator in good working order, thereby preventing potential engine overheating and the subsequent severe damage that can occur.

A fully functional radiator and cooling system is essential in preventing overheating, which can cause expensive breakdowns and may result in serious engine damage. Modern engines also operate more efficiently within specific temperature ranges. Although cooling system failure is not always explosive, more subtle signs, such as leaking coolant or the need to constantly top up coolant, may be indicators that the radiator is faulty. In addition, you may experience a high temperature in slow traffic and notice a sweetish “hot water” smell or even steam from under the bonnet.

Repco Authorised Service technicians are trained to diagnose problems that affect the entire engine cooling system. A cooling system check is an easy and effective way to get peace of mind that your car’s cooling system is in good condition.

What happens if I don’t get a radiator flush or service?

Over time rust and scale deposits accumulate and the whole system becomes choked and it becomes less effective at cooling and protecting your car. This build up of rust and debris can damage the important parts of your cooling system including your water pump, radiator, hoses and thermostat, affecting the lifespan of those parts and leading to expensive repairs or replacements in the future.
